Quality specifications for research material commonly state peptide purity, copper stoichiometry, counter-ion identity, and residual water content. Frequent counter-ions include acetate and trifluoroacetate, which differ in mass and in their effect on solubility and handling. Whether batch-to-batch differences in reported responses trace to these parameters or to assay conditions remains an open question, since published comparisons rarely control for all of them at once. Independent verification therefore normally pairs a purity measurement with an elemental copper measurement on the same lot.
Practical handling notes centre on limiting exposure to water, oxygen, and repeated temperature cycling. Weighed powder is often equilibrated to room temperature before opening to avoid condensation on the solid. Working solutions are typically divided into single-use aliquots and frozen rather than stored refrigerated for long periods. Reported shelf lives vary widely between laboratories, and no single set of conditions is universally treated as a reference standard, which complicates direct comparison of published stability figures.
Solutions of GHK-Cu respond strongly to pH, redox conditions, and the presence of competing chelators such as EDTA. Below roughly pH 4 the copper tends to dissociate, because the amide nitrogen donors become protonated and can no longer coordinate. Strongly alkaline conditions instead favour hydrolysis and precipitation of copper hydroxide. Dissolved oxygen and light accelerate breakdown of the peptide backbone, and the copper released during that process can catalyse further oxidation, so dry, cold, dark storage is the usual recommendation.
The International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients lists the substance as copper tripeptide-1, the name that appears on most topical product labels. Related designations include copper peptide and GHK-Cu, and the hyphenated form is common in research literature. In cosmetics the material is regulated as an ingredient rather than as a drug, so products may reach the market without evidence of the effects claimed for them. Whether those effects are clinically meaningful is an open question, since most supportive data come from laboratory work and small trials.
GHK-Cu is the copper complex of the tripeptide glycyl-L-histidyl-L-lysine, a short sequence found naturally in human plasma, saliva and urine. Loren Pickart reported the isolation of the free peptide in 1973 while studying factors that influenced the growth of aged liver cells in culture. The peptide was later shown to bind copper(II) with high affinity, and the metal-bound form became the focus of most subsequent research. Its concentration in circulation declines markedly with age, a pattern that is well documented, though the physiological consequences of that decline remain debated.
The peptide portion consists of three amino acids: glycine, histidine and lysine. Copper(II) coordinates through the imidazole nitrogen of histidine, the alpha-amino group of glycine and a deprotonated amide nitrogen of the backbone, producing a roughly square-planar geometry. This arrangement gives the complex its characteristic blue-to-violet colour and helps it resist dissociation in water. Reported stability constants are high, although values differ between studies because of differences in ionic strength and measurement method.

Quality control for GHK-Cu relies on documentation and independent testing rather than a single accepted standard. A certificate of analysis may report peptide purity, copper content, residual solvents, water content, and microbial limits, but the underlying methods and acceptance criteria vary by supplier. Verification can include mass confirmation, amino acid analysis, and comparison with a reference standard when one is available. Open questions include how different copper-binding modes or peptide isomers affect measured activity and whether conventional purity assays capture those differences. Buyers of research-grade material typically need to request raw data rather than rely solely on a summary certificate.
Laboratory characterization of GHK-Cu typically combines separation, spectroscopic, and elemental techniques. Reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography is widely used to assess peptide purity, often with ultraviolet detection near the copper-related absorption band or with mass spectrometry for identity confirmation. Because the molecule contains copper, elemental methods such as inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry or atomic absorption spectroscopy are used to quantify metal content and confirm stoichiometry. No single universal pharmacopeial monograph exists for GHK-Cu. Laboratories therefore validate their own methods, and reported purity values depend on the chosen assay and calibration standards.
Commercial products list GHK-Cu as copper tripeptide-1, a cosmetic ingredient. Formulators value its blue color and water solubility, which allow incorporation into serums, creams, and masks. Regulatory treatment varies: in the United States it appears in cosmetics, while some jurisdictions classify certain claims as drug-like. The compound is not an approved drug for any indication. Studies continue to examine its effects on skin, hair, and wound repair, but dosage, delivery, and long-term safety questions remain open.
GHK-Cu is a coordination complex formed between the tripeptide glycyl-L-histidyl-L-lysine and copper(II). The peptide sequence consists of glycine, histidine, and lysine, and its imidazole and amino groups provide binding sites for the metal ion. In the complex, copper is held through nitrogen donors from the histidine side chain, the N-terminal amine, and deprotonated amide nitrogens. The resulting compound is intensely blue and water-soluble. It occurs naturally in human plasma, saliva, and urine at low concentrations.
The peptide was first isolated from human albumin in 1973 by Loren Pickart, who later described its copper-binding behavior. Early work linked the complex to wound healing and tissue remodeling. Plasma levels of GHK decline with age, a pattern that stimulated interest in topical and supplemental applications. Researchers have reported that the tripeptide influences collagen synthesis, antioxidant defense, and inflammatory signaling in cell and animal models. Human clinical evidence remains limited and often relies on small studies.
Copper takes part in redox chemistry, and the same property that makes it useful in enzymes can generate reactive oxygen species when the ion is loosely bound. GHK chelates copper through imidazole, amino, and amide nitrogen donors, which reduces the amount of free copper in solution. Whether that chelation is protective, neutral, or harmful in a given tissue is not settled. Laboratory assays report both antioxidant and pro-oxidant behavior, depending on the conditions and the readout used.
Published work on GHK-Cu is dominated by in vitro experiments and small animal studies. Human trials tend to be short and small, with endpoints such as skin appearance rather than clinical outcomes. Review articles often summarize the same underlying laboratory findings, which can make the evidence base look broader than it is. Several basic questions remain open: the concentration of the intact complex in human tissue, the route by which it crosses the skin barrier, and whether effects seen in culture produce measurable changes in people.
Laboratory studies describe GHK-Cu as a source of copper that cells can take up, with reported effects on collagen, elastin, and glycosaminoglycan synthesis in cultured fibroblasts. The peptide also appears in wound-repair research, where it is linked to the activity of matrix metalloproteinases and their inhibitors. These observations come largely from cell and animal models. How directly the complex controls any single pathway in intact human skin remains an open question, and reported effects depend on concentration, vehicle, and exposure time.

=== EU ban === The EU banned estradiol, progesterone, testosterone, zeranol, melengestrol acetate and trenbolone acetate. The first three are synthetic versions of endogenous hormones that are naturally produced in humans and animals, and in a wide range of foods, whereas the last two are synthetic, designed to mimic the behaviour of endogenous hormones. Zeranol (alpha-zearalanol) is produced semi-synthetically, but occurs naturally in some foods. It is one of several derivatives of zearalenone produced by certain Fusarium. Although its occurrence in animal products can be partly due to ingestion of such feeds, alpha-zearalanol can be produced endogenously in ruminants that have ingested zearalenone and some zearalenone derivatives. The EU did not impose an absolute ban. Under veterinary supervision, cattle farmers were permitted to administer the synthetic versions of natural hormones for cost-reduction and possibly therapeutic purposes, such as synchronising oestrus cycles. All six hormones were licensed for use in the US and in Canada. Under the Agreement on the Application of Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures, signatories have the right to impose restrictions on health and safety grounds subject to scientific analysis. The heart of the dispute was the fact that risk analysis is statistical, and thus unable to determine with absolute certainty the absence of health risks. While US and Canada beef producers claimed that beef produced with the use of hormones was safe, the EU asserted that it was not safe.
===== Mass media and freedom of the press ===== During the government of Santiago Peña, the situation of the mass media and freedom of the press in Paraguay worsened, according to the Chapultepec Index of the Inter American Press Association (SIP). In 2023, Paraguay fell to position #10 in the freedom of speech ranking in Latin America, a drop from position #8 the previous year. This change led the country to be classified as "restricted" in terms of freedom of the press, instead of "low restriction". Santiago Peña has been questioned by sectors of the press, especially by ABC Color, due to alleged conflicts of interest and use of public assets. On several occasions he responded critically, accusing media outlets of extortion and manipulation. After revelations about his stake in Ueno Holding, a company benefited during his government, he announced in April 2025 the sale of his shares. Although he signed the Declaration of Chapultepec, his relationship with the press has been tense.
=== Yum! Brands subsidiary === PepsiCo spun out Taco Bell and its other restaurant chains in late 1997 in Tricon Global Restaurants. With the purchase of Yorkshire Global Restaurants, the owners of A&W and Long John Silver's chains, Tricon changed its name to Yum! Brands on May 16, 2002. In March 2005, the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW) won a landmark victory in its national boycott of Taco Bell for human rights. Taco Bell agreed to meet all the coalition's demands to improve wage and working conditions for Florida tomato pickers in its supply chain. After four years of boycott, Taco Bell and Yum! Brands agreed to make an agreement called the CIW-Yum agreement with representatives of CIW at Yum! Brands headquarters.
=== North Africa === The Medical Research Council decided that the time had come for field trials of penicillin. The location of centres to receive the drug was kept secret so as to not provoke demand for the drug when it was still in short supply. Florey was asked to go to North Africa, where the North African campaign was ongoing. He travelled to Algiers on the hospital ship HMHS Newfoundland in May 1943. On 29 June he was joined by Hugh Cairns, another Rhodes Scholar from Adelaide, who now held the rank of brigadier in the British Army, and was in charge of St Hugh's Military Hospital (Head Injuries) in Oxford, who brought with him a stockpile of 40 million Oxford units of penicillin. Florey resisted well-intentioned efforts by the War Office to grant him military rank. Over the next two months Florey and Cairns flew back and forth between Algiers, Sousse and Tripoli, with a week in Cairo. They treated over one hundred cases and compiled a report that ran to over one hundred pages. He gave lectures on penicillin, and his report contained recommendations for training of medical officers in its use. The fighting in North Africa ended in May 1943, so most of the cases Florey saw were not recently wounded soldiers, but ones with old wounds that had not healed; battle casualties began arriving again after the Allied invasion of Sicily in July. He considered that the source of infection in many cases was from the hospital rather than the battlefield, and advocated changes to the way that patients were treated to take advantage of the properties of penicillin.

== Precautions == Protactinium is both toxic and highly radioactive; thus, it is handled exclusively in a sealed glove box. Its major isotope 231Pa has a specific activity of 0.048 curies (1.8 GBq) per gram and primarily emits alpha particles, which can be stopped by a thin layer of any material. However, it slowly decays into 227Ac, and then follows the more rapid actinium series, making its total activity (alpha, beta, and gamma) greater than one would calculate from that figure. As protactinium is present in small amounts in most natural products and materials, it is ingested with food or water and inhaled with air. Only about 0.05% of ingested protactinium is absorbed into the blood and the remainder is excreted. From the blood, about 40% of the protactinium deposits in the bones, about 15% goes to the liver, 2% to the kidneys, and the rest leaves the body. The biological half-life of protactinium is about 50 years in the bones, whereas its biological half-life in other organs has a fast and slow component. For example, 70% of the protactinium in the liver has a biological half-life of 10 days, and the remaining 30% for 60 days. The corresponding values for kidneys are 20% (10 days) and 80% (60 days). In each affected organ, protactinium promotes cancer via its radioactivity. The maximum amount of Pa allowed in the human body is 0.03 μCi (1.1 kBq), which corresponds to 0.5 micrograms of 231Pa. The maximum allowed concentrations of 231Pa in the air in Germany is 3×10−4 Bq/m3.
== First Ministry (reconstituted) == A reshuffle on 10 February 1995 saw several changes in order and portfolios, but no changes of personnel. The Governor, Major-General Michael Jeffery, designated 17 principal executive offices of the Government under section 43(2) of the Constitution Acts Amendment Act 1899. The following ministers were then appointed to the positions, and served until the reconstitution of the Ministry on 9 January 1997. Blue entries indicate members of the Liberal Party, whilst green entries indicate members of the National Party.
=== Religion === As of 2011, 41.5% identified themselves as Christian, 18.6% Muslim, 17.8% Hindu and 10.6% with no religion. Brent is home of the Neasden Temple, once the largest Hindu Mandir outside India; and JFS, the largest Jewish school in Europe. There is also an Islamic school called Islamia Primary School founded by Cat Stevens. The following table shows the religious identity of residents residing in Brent according to the 2001, 2011 and the 2021 censuses.
While artesunate is used primarily as treatment for malaria, there is some evidence that it may also have some beneficial effects in Schistosoma haematobium infection, but has not been evaluated in large randomized trials. Artesunate is used as the treatment of choice for severe malaria by the World Health Organization (WHO) over quinine.
=== Fungal === A single fungal serpin has been characterized to date: celpin from Piromyces spp. strain E2. Piromyces is a genus of anaerobic fungi found in the gut of ruminants and is important for digesting plant material. Celpin is predicted to be inhibitory and contains two N-terminal dockerin domains in addition to its serpin domain. Dockerins are commonly found in proteins that localise to the fungal cellulosome, a large extracellular multiprotein complex that breaks down cellulose. It is therefore suggested that celpin may protect the cellulosome against plant proteases. Certain bacterial serpins similarly localize to the cellulosome.

=== Gel === Gels are used as stationary phase for GPC. The pore size of a gel must be carefully controlled in order to be able to apply the gel to a given separation. Other desirable properties of the gel forming agent are the absence of ionizing groups and, in a given solvent, low affinity for the substances to be separated. Commercial gels like PLgel & Styragel (cross-linked polystyrene-divinylbenzene), LH-20 (hydroxypropylated Sephadex), Bio-Gel (cross-linked polyacrylamide), HW-20 & HW-40 (hydroxylated methacrylic polymer), and agarose gel are often used based on different separation requirements.
Pan frying (sauté) on stove top heat: 120 °C (248 °F) Deep frying: 160–180 °C (320–356 °F) Oven baking: Average of 180 °C (356 °F) Smoke point decreases at a different pace in different oils. Considerably above the temperature of the smoke point is the flash point, the point at which the vapours from the oil can ignite in air, given an ignition source. The following table presents smoke points of various fats and oils.
== Agronomy == The plant thrives even in marginal soils and competes well with weeds. It is well-adapted to high-altitude subsistence agriculture and gives high yields; 30 tonnes per hectare are yielded at 3000 meters, but up to 70 tons per hectare have been produced under research conditions. Its extraordinary resistance to insects, nematode and bacterial pests is attributed to high levels of isothiocyanates. Although mashua is fully domesticated, it can persist in wild vegetation because of its aggressive growth and robustness. In Colombia, it is planted as a companion crop to repel pests in potato fields. Mashua’s high natural resistance to pests has made it a good crop for its potential in pest management. Glucosinolates contained in the plant have been shown to harm aphid herbivory. Spraying a crop with a mixture containing glucosinolates sourced from mashua can lead to up to 97% of aphid mortality. Molecules extracted from mashua can be part of a viable, effective, and eco-friendly alternative to synthetic pesticides. Traits like these raise the potential for mashua to be used in agroecology.

Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry or atomic absorption spectroscopy gives total copper after acid digestion. Combining that value with a peptide concentration from chromatography or amino acid analysis yields the metal-to-peptide ratio.
The colour arises from electronic transitions within the copper(II) d orbital set, which absorb visible light. The absorption maximum shifts with pH and with the number of nitrogen donors bound, so the spectrum serves as a rough probe of coordination state.
Aqueous solutions degrade faster than dry powder, because hydrolysis, oxidation, and metal dissociation all proceed in water. Dividing solutions into small aliquots and freezing them limits repeated freeze-thaw cycles. Exact shelf lives are not well established and depend on concentration and buffer.
It is a complex of a three-amino-acid peptide, glycine, histidine and lysine, bound to a single copper(II) ion. The metal is held mainly by the histidine side chain and the peptide backbone. Most commercial material is supplied as an acetate salt rather than as the free complex.
